Dessert art: Nutella brioche. Because it's right.
Why would we even look at the stars when we could just eat one made from bread and Nutella? Let's forget about Rosetta and that comet, let's study Nutella brioche! (With infographics!)
There is never a reason not to make Nutella brioche. It's not even that difficult to make your own bread dough!

NDSM: GENESIS
To know where you're going, you need to know where you've been #startedfromthebottom #nowthewholeteamfuckinghere.
NDSM has proudly risen - not from ashes, but something way cooler - and to plan for the future, we need to look to the past. We present:
Long before New Dessert Science Magazine was a twitter account, and long before it was even a blog, NDSM was an idea. A twinkle in a young, hungry scientist's eyes. That young scientist just couldn't be content with eating regular old ice cream anymore, and shouted NO! NO MORE! to the heavens, and decided to take her dessert destiny into her own hands. Inspiration struck, and our young scientist remembered that basically everything ever could be made 300% better by adding peanut butter. AND SO SHE DID.
And the rest, as they say, is history... or legend. Yes, legend, much better.. or a SAGA!

Could pie save your life?
As scientists, we are painfully aware that our planet is doomed. The way the world is going, everything around us is probably going to sink to the bottom of the ocean pretty soon. But until then, let's try to make the best of it! How, you say? Pie, I say!
As we are destined to turn the Earth into either a scorching dessert or a frozen tundra, let's see if desserts can be our savior. Our hypothesis:
Obviously, we all know that the motion of atoms and molecules creates a form of energy called heat, or rather thermal energy, which is present in all matter, even in the coldest voids of space. OBVIOUSLY. But how to make it work to your advantage?

Does making and eating blueberry pie make you less cold?

Alcohol and desserts
They say everything can be made better by alcohol. As scientists, we love testing theories!
Making desserts better than they already are is an ambitious feat, but it is our purpose in life. We decided to test if the formerly mentioned saying about alcohol could be applied to desserts as well. To remain objective, we decided to let professionals make the boozy dessert, and bought a massive slice of Bourbon Pecan Pie:

SURPRISE!
You've been waiting for this. Get ready for it. We're finally revealing the results of that poll that has been up on this page for years now. There was no way for you guys to view the results before RIGHT NOW. I know you're all excited and stuff. So, GET READY FOR IT.
We are sad to inform you that we had to use a pie chart to tell you that cake is the winner in this poll. WE CALL DISCRIMINATION.
Also, the numbers didn't add up to a 100%? The Blogspot pollthing clearly doesn't know math.

IT'S A CAKESMAS MIRACLE!
Like Jesus itself on the very real first Christmas morning, NDSM has risen back from its ashes! That's the story, right? We're scientists, we don't know how Jesus works.
But we do know how to celebrate! With cake! And song! And cakesong!
We present "Carol of the Cakes":
Hark! How the cakes
Sweet tasty cakes
All seem to say
"Eat me today"
Cakesmas is here
Trans fats and cheer
To young and old
Both hot and cold
Yum yum ding dong
That is their song
With joyful ring
So much icing
Mouth shovelling
One seems to hear
Pies too appear
From everywhere
Filling the air
Oh how we pound
All cakes around
Fresh, even stale
All are for sale
Gaily they bring
Crumbs when they sing
Songs of cheer
Cakesmas is here
Merry, merry, merry cakesmas
Merry merry merry cakesmas
On, on they send
Cakes without end
Cinnamon, scones
To every home
Merry merry merry cakesmas
Merry merry cakesmas
Yum
Yum
Ding
Dong

These are not cookies. A surprise party for your mouth.
A scientist's life is full of surprises. Sometimes there are surprise assignments, sometimes there are surprise findings. Sometimes there are surprise parties! (Just kidding, scientists have no friends.) This time we have a surprise dessert! It looks like a cookie! It tastes like a brownie!
How did this happen? The plan was to make chocolate cookies. This scientist scoured the web for a recipe that looked good. The perfect recipe appeared to be a recipe for chocolate cookies with some hazelnut paste in between (hello Nutella, I love you!). This scientist decided to just make the cookies. Here is the lazily translated recipe, with blurry pictures and comments!!:

History month: Blueberry muffins
This month is history month. In this month we share old dessertscienceprojects. Today it's time for blueberry muffins. They were made somewhere last month. They are all gone now, obviously. But they had to be shared. Behold: Blueberry muffins.
This post does not in any way mean that this scientist forgot to post this. Or that this scientist forgot to take pictures while making them.

Desserts around the World - The Netherlands
I know, I live here, all my desserts were desserts from The Netherlands.
But look at this yummy chocolate cake with almonds!
It might not look very pretty, but neither does your face.

Desserts around the World - Texas pt. 4
In a perfect world. all desserts would be tasty, delicious and just all around wonderful. But sadly, we do not live in a perfect world. We live in a world where people cook up horrible things and still dare to call them dessert.
For a traveling scientist exploring the fine desserts of America, the brownie is not only a milestone, but a delight. Unfortunately, this is not a brownie. Do not let the picture deceive you. This is some sort of dirty sponge dipped in chocolate syrup and served with whipped cream and ice cream.

Desserts around the World - Texas pt. 3
MERRY CAKESMAS!
Christmas is about of a lot of things, most of them not exactly christmasy, and sometimes you have to remind people that Christmas is about one thing: Jesus's birthday. And how do we celebrate birthdays? With cake!
Last night, our traveling scientist celebrated Jesus with some proper American cake. Being so American and all, you'd think Texas, the most American state in America, would have its own version of it. But in a sad twist of fate, the Texans look to the east when ordering this most popular dessert. We can give you:
NEW YORK STYLE CHEESECAKE
Our scientist examined the cheesecake to find the New York bit, but to no avail. Our conclusion: New York Style just means "absolutely fucking massive cheesecake".
DESSERT ACCOMPLISHED!

Desserts around the World - Texas pt. 2
This cakesmas, one of our trusted dessert scientists is exploring the wonderful world of desserts in Texas. As mentioned in part 1, Texas is quite varied when it comes to desserts, presenting not only good ol' American desserts, but also tasty treats from good ol' Mejico. Today, we present
Sopapillas are a fried pastry usually served with powdered sugar or honey, and in this case with some ice cream on the side. JEALOUS?

A picture post of failure
Sometimes you try something new with GREAT success, sometimes you try something which results in failure. If I had planned on making a rice pudding with barely baked bread on the sides and uncooked bread on the bottom, then this would have been a success! Sadly, I was going for a rijstevlaai. A Dutch dessert that is very delicious. It is still very delicious in raw and uncooked and smushy form, but it would've been nice to have it perfect!
Here is a picture by picture report on how it went wrong, while thinking it went perfect!

CRUMPKINS! (aka cupmuffins, or muffincakes)
The life of a dessert scientist is a busy one, doing science all day every day. Sometimes, there's just not enough time to make desserts on your free time! That's why God invented Earth, the Heavens, and cake mix (jk, God doesn't exist! We're scientists!). Here's a tutorial on making crumpkins out of cake mix, effort and a little creativity!

Experiment? I hardly know ment!: A photoessay of dessert failure
Earlier this month Carmen threw the dessert gauntlet down and challenged us all to a chocolate-cake-in-a-mug-off. Some of us accepted that challenge. Some of us failed miserably. Some of us are me, and here is our story.
This is the way it started, correctly enough. Ingredients: things that, with a little bit of heat and magic, somehow turn into a chocolate cake in a coffee mug. My hopes were high and my friends were in low places at this point.

Hallowe'en Treat #1: Orange Chocolate Mousse
I could write out a recipe for this, and probably will at some point this week, but fuck me was this tiring. I may write a couple of don'ts for this recipe so you'll have some idea of some of the things that went wrong.
